Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) is the name given to a large group of conditions that affect the tissue around the air sacs in the lungs. These tiny air sacs allow oxygen to move into the blood. When the surrounding tissue becomes inflamed or scarred, it grows thicker and stiffer. The lungs then cannot expand easily, and less oxygen may reach the blood.
Some forms of ILD mainly cause inflammation, while others cause permanent scarring called pulmonary fibrosis. A condition involving this scarring may also be described as fibrotic lung disease. Patients may notice a dry cough, tiredness or shortness of breath during everyday activities.
Interstitial lung disease treatment depends on the cause, the amount of lung damage and how quickly the condition is changing. Sarvodaya Hospital’s Pulmonology & Sleep Medicine department provides ILD evaluation and long-term respiratory care.
Certain factors may increase the possibility of developing ILD.
These include:
Symptoms and a clinical examination may suggest a lung problem, but they cannot confirm ILD on their own. Doctors at a reputable hospital for interstitial lung disease usually combine imaging, breathing tests and medical history to determine whether ILD is present and identify its type.
Tests may include:
An interstitial lung disease specialist may review the test results with radiologists, rheumatologists or other doctors before confirming the diagnosis and treatment plan.
Treatment cannot always remove existing lung scarring. However, it may reduce inflammation, slow further damage, improve symptoms and help the patient remain active. An experienced ILD specialist doctor in Delhi NCR selects the treatment according to the exact type of ILD.
Treatment options may include:
Early diagnosis allows treatment to begin before extensive lung damage develops.
Timely care may offer the following benefits:
As lung tissue becomes thicker or more scarred, less oxygen may pass into the blood. The heart and breathing muscles may then have to work harder.
Possible complications include:
Consult a trusted pulmonologist in Noida if breathlessness, a dry cough or reduced exercise capacity lasts for several weeks or continues to worsen. Assessment is also important for people with an autoimmune condition, a family history of pulmonary fibrosis or regular exposure to harmful dust.
Seek urgent medical care for sudden or severe breathlessness, chest pain, confusion, bluish lips or a rapid fall in the oxygen level in the blood at an ILD treatment hospital.
ILD cannot always be prevented because some forms result from inherited changes, autoimmune diseases or an unknown cause. However, practical steps may reduce avoidable lung injury and support treatment.
